Is associate professor of Computer Science at University of Catania. His research areas include Database, Data Mining, Big Data and Algorithms with applications to Networks and Bioinformatics. In the last few years the main research projects developed by him and his group involved: algorithms and tools network analysis including motif finding and subgraph matching; recommendation techniques with application on bioinformatics; AI and Machine Learning tools for the analysis of clinical data; development of systems and databases for the analysis of biological data including: DNA-Seq and RNA-seq data. Alfredo Pulvirenti carries out a large part of his research themes in collaboration with colleagues of Italian and foreign universities. Alfredo Pulvirenti, actively collaborates with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Catania section, for the development of Machine Learning Algorithms and Data Mining techniques for the analysis time series representing seismic and volcanic signals.
Alfredo Pulvirenti has published numerous scientific papers on several international conference and journals on bioinformatics and Data Mining. He has been scientific coordinator in several research project funded by MIUR also with industrial partners. He has been also member of national and European projects. He is co-chair of ”Jacob T. Schawartz International School for Scientific Research in BioInformatics and Computational Biology”. He has served as PC member of many International Conferences. He has been referee for several international journals, and he has been guest editor on BMC Bioinformatics, Briefings in Bioinformatics and Information Systems Elsevier. He currently is Associate Editor for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, Frontiers in Genetics, Frontiers in Plant Science and Biomolecules MDPI. He is member of the PhD in “Complex Systems for Physical, Socio-economic and Life Sciences” at the University of Catania.
